on beautiful Cayman Brac

storm2

Little red crabs began streaming ashore, a very unusual event.

"... I should have told you about the warning we had before the hurricane.  Young crabs - they came in on the rising sea like seaweed, and they was going to the trees.  All you could hear was noise in the grape trees and then they was going to high land... they was all headed to the Bluff.  Everybody ignored it, they didn't take it as a warning."

There was little forewarning, no radar, and the only radio was disabled.

"The roaring.  This tidal wave was coming in now and bringing everything it could ... Hestus said 'my barometer gone down and she can't come back'.  No radios, no broadcasting station, we the only barometers ... so we all had to leave the house and go up to the cave."

They ran for the caves high on the Bluff to save their lives.  The destruction was massive.

"I said my God, our whole island destroyed, under water, shops, churches, houses, boats."

And little 17 month old REBECCA was in a struggle for her life....
